My Why

In 2010 I was fresh out of grad school, burned out on writing, but NEWLY MARRIED!! Brian and I had met in a bar and fallen in love over a salsa dancing date. Our wedding was the MOST fun and my best memory was our sparkler exit to Journey's Don't Stop Believing. The smoke and lights, running through an aisle of our family and friends before we hopped in the waiting car: I wanted to bottle it up and keep that memory forever.

We got home to Sacramento. Put that picture of the sparkler exit on our dresser. We were newlyweds and it was magical. Then it was hard. So, so hard. Money was tight; I had just launched my business and was struggling to balance that with my office job.

And then I got pregnant with our son. When he arrived, it was so nice to finally feel like a family. I put that sparkler exit picture in the new nursery, and I used to sit in the glider and stare at it, wonder about all that lay ahead of us.

That first year as parents was one of the most challenging seasons of our lives. Sitting in the nursery and staring at that moment with Brian surrounded by friends and family and hope? That pulled me through some hard times. Things got better and we moved to Oregon and our kids grew, and looking at that picture now reminds me of how far we've come and how strong we are.

I want to do that for you. I want to capture a moment that can stay in your heart so clearly that it carries you through the next 50 years of your marriage and all its valleys and hills.
